British Columbia's Money Laundering Investigation Committee is holding a productive week-long hearing related to alleged criminal activity taking place in the state. This Tuesday saw former superintendent of the Richmond RCMP, Ward Clapham, share his personal experience with money laundering in the region and, in particular, River Rock casinos and resorts.

For decades, Richmond's River Rock Casino has been regarded as one of the casino venues raising suspicions regarding money laundering. It has been reported that high rollers transport large amounts of cash in duffel bags and 20 Canadian dollar bills. On October 27, a new hearing on money laundering was held at a local gambling house. Back in 2004, Mr. Clapham was the chief constable of Richmond, and he kept a close eye on everything that happened in the area. Around that time, reports of kidnapping, extortion, assault, and loan sharking took place inside the casino resort. Mr. Claffham also pointed out that illegal gambling houses were soaring at the time, and that many new places had emerged. This eventually prepared to attract organized criminals from close and far away and take advantage of them.

These factors increased his concern about criminal activity in his area, and he made it clear that more money was needed to monitor casino locations. This request was submitted to the city of Richmond but did not receive an expected response. On the contrary, Mr Clapham said he was not prepared to provide more money for policing because federal RCMP and British Columbia units were already carrying out surveillance.
